Our verdict on Orca

Orca is a free, open-source screen reader from the GNOME Project for people accessing Linux graphical desktops through speech and/or braille. It can read documents and web pages, navigate interface structures, and review screen contents. Its intended role matters for category shoppers: Orca is not itself a screen magnifier, so someone who needs enlarged on-screen content should look for a magnification tool instead. GNOME desktop zoom is separate from Orca, rather than an Orca capability.

Orca's feature set centers on reading and navigation. Structural navigation helps move through document content, while flat review examines a window spatially and mouse review examines screen contents. Configurable keyboard layouts and keybindings, along with multiple user configuration profiles, give users ways to tailor interaction. Refreshable braille support sits alongside speech output, making Orca relevant to users who need either or both modalities. These features are aimed at screen reading, not magnification.

Platform and ecosystem fit are specific: Orca is for Linux, and it works with applications and toolkits supporting AT-SPI, the accessibility infrastructure used by free and open desktops. The open-source product is free and self-hosted, with documentation and community support channels. That makes it a fit for individuals and organizations seeking a Linux screen reader within an AT-SPI-compatible environment. It is not the right pick for someone whose main requirement is screen enlargement, or for a setup outside Linux and the supported accessibility ecosystem.
