Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Data Catalog is a managed service for discovering, organizing, enriching, and governing technical, business, and operational metadata. It is aimed at data analysts, data scientists, data stewards, and data engineers working with OCI and broader enterprise data environments. The catalog harvests technical metadata from cloud, on-premises, and connected sources into a searchable, standardized inventory. Its business glossary supports categories, hierarchies, owners, and approval status, while tags, business terms, and custom properties add context to assets.
Lineage is a notable part of the catalog's scope: graphs include entity- and column-level views, with impact views to help assess relationships between assets. Scheduled or on-demand automatic harvesting supports keeping catalog metadata refreshed. OCI Data Flow and Object Storage data lakes can use a unified metastore. Integrations include Oracle Database, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Apache Hive, Apache Kafka, Microsoft SQL Server, IBM DB2, Microsoft Azure SQL Database, and OCI data services. REST APIs, CLI, and SDKs give teams programmatic access, while IAM-based policy management provides an access-control path within OCI.
According to Oracle, Data Catalog is available at no extra cost to OCI customers; there is no separate paid plan described. Oracle documents a limit of two catalog instances per region, distinct from a metadata-source quota. Deployment is cloud-based, though the service can harvest metadata from on-premises sources. Documentation, ticket support, and community support are listed. Choose it when an OCI environment needs a free catalog with glossary, harvesting, lineage, and APIs across connected systems. It is less suitable for organizations seeking a catalog independent of OCI or a non-cloud deployment model.
