Our verdict on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Cache

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Cache is a fully managed caching service for applications that need low-latency access to frequently used data. It supports Valkey and Redis engines, non-sharded and sharded clusters, adjustable node count, shard count, and memory, plus replica-based failover. The service is aimed at OCI applications such as web applications, real-time analytics, gaming, and other workloads that benefit from reducing database load. Applications can access clusters through the OCI Console, CLI, or REST API.

Pricing is usage-based and billed per gigabyte-hour, with memory billed according to provisioned usage. The Low Memory plan costs $0.0194 per GB per hour for memory usage up to 10 GB per node. The High Memory plan costs $0.0136 per GB per hour for memory usage above 10 GB per node. There is no free plan. The published plans make this a relevant option for OCI users comparing cache services by ongoing provisioned-memory cost, while teams should account for capacity changes as node, shard, and memory settings are adjustable.

OCI Cache also covers operational requirements that matter for managed Redis-compatible infrastructure. It provides RDB backups, restore, import, and export, with cross-region replication described among its capabilities. Client connections can use TLS encryption, while OCI VCN and network security group integration support private networking and network controls. Failover and high-availability configurations use replicas. Scheduled backups require an external scheduler such as cron rather than a built-in schedule, so teams wanting native backup scheduling should consider another service. OCI users needing Valkey or Redis with flexible cluster sizing, failover, and OCI networking should consider it; workloads outside OCI or those requiring a free tier may not be a fit.
