Our verdict on OpenUEM
OpenUEM is a free, open-source endpoint manager for IT administrators responsible for small to medium-sized environments. It combines endpoint agents with a web console and supports Windows, Linux distributions, and macOS; Docker can be used for deployment. Its focus is practical desktop administration: inventory, application deployment, configuration profiles, remote assistance, file operations, and reporting. Organizations and sites provide multi-tenancy for separating managed environments.
For teams that need more than an asset list, OpenUEM groups routine administration in one system. Inventory covers endpoint hardware, operating systems, software, disks, printers, and network information. Applications can be deployed through Winget, Flatpak, and Homebrew, while configuration profiles handle package, registry, local-user, local-group, and script tasks. Remote assistance is available through VNC, RDP, or RustDesk, and SFTP supports browsing, uploading, downloading, and deleting endpoint files. Security checks include Windows update, Linux security-update, antivirus, and BitLocker status. PDF and CSV reports cover agents, computers, security, and software.
The main trade-off is its self-hosted, agent-based model: teams need to operate the server and manage agents rather than rely on a hosted service. Integrations include NetBird and identity options such as Authelia, Authentik, Keycloak, and Zitadel, alongside the deployment and remote-access tools. The product is best suited to administrators who want open-source desktop management with inventory and operational controls in one console. Teams seeking native mobile-device management, automated enrollment, or remote wipe should compare alternatives that explicitly provide those capabilities.
