Our verdict on OpenStack Barbican

OpenStack Barbican is an open-source, self-hosted key management service for storing, provisioning, and managing secret data. It is intended for teams operating OpenStack environments that need API-based handling of passwords, symmetric and asymmetric keys, X.509 certificates, or raw binary data. Its REST API provides the main access path, while Keystone supports authentication and authorization. Barbican also supports per-secret access control lists, project quotas, secret-consumer tracking, and containers for grouping related secrets.

Its strongest fit comes from its OpenStack ecosystem and configurable backend model. Barbican integrates with OpenStack, Keystone, Castellan, KMIP, Dogtag, HashiCorp Vault, and PKCS#11 HSMs. Deployers can select database, HSM, KMIP, Dogtag, or Vault-backed plugins according to their infrastructure and security requirements. PKCS#11 and HSM integration make it relevant where hardware-backed key protection matters, while asynchronous worker processing through OpenStack messaging supports background operations. CADF audit events for REST API requests add an audit trail for API activity.

Barbican is a focused infrastructure service rather than a broad developer secrets platform. Its self-hosted model gives OpenStack operators control over deployment and storage choices, but also places configuration, maintenance, and service operation within their environment. Teams that need secret expiration, access governance, hardware-backed storage, and OpenStack-native integration should consider it. Organizations looking primarily for dynamic short-lived credentials, automated secret rotation, CI/CD injection, or Kubernetes integration should evaluate alternatives designed around those workflows instead.
