Our verdict on OpenSearch

OpenSearch is an open-source search and analytics suite for developers, IT teams, SREs, and DevOps teams. Its observability capabilities cover logs, metrics, and traces, combining ingestion, search, correlation, distributed tracing, application performance monitoring, dashboards, alerting, and query tools. Teams can deploy it locally, on premises, or in hybrid and multicloud environments through its search engine, data store, Dashboards, Data Prepper, APIs, and extensible plugins.

The open-source model is central to the buying decision. OpenSearch is distributed as software rather than a vendor-hosted SaaS plan, and its official product pages state there are no licensing fees. The platform includes index lifecycle policies with rollover and deletion actions, but it does not present a standardized observability retention tier. This suits organizations that want control over deployment and platform design, while teams seeking a packaged hosted service with predefined operational tiers should look elsewhere.

Its ecosystem supports OpenTelemetry-based telemetry ingestion, Prometheus and PromQL metrics analysis, OpenSearch Data Prepper, Fluent Bit, Slack, Amazon SNS, and webhooks. The feature set extends from log search and trace analytics to service maps, RED metrics, scheduled notifications, machine-learning anomaly detection, forecasting, and REST APIs for cluster, document, index, search, and ingest operations. That breadth makes OpenSearch a fit for open-source teams building a unified platform across multiple telemetry types. It is less suitable for buyers who prefer a narrowly focused observability product with vendor-managed hosting and a simpler deployment model.
