Our verdict on OpenRepo

OpenRepo is a web-based, self-hosted server for generating and managing Debian apt/deb, Red Hat RPM, and generic package repositories. It is aimed at Linux package repository maintainers that want control over repository hosting and administration rather than a hosted commercial service. The project is open source under the AGPL-3.0 license and is designed to run with Docker and Docker Compose. Its web interface, REST API, and CLI give teams several ways to manage repositories and connect package operations with development workflows.

The strongest fit is repository lifecycle management. OpenRepo supports package upload, deletion, copying, and promotion between repositories, alongside package version management. It also provides PGP signing-key creation and management, which supports teams that need signed package repositories. Per-repository user read/write permissions add fine-grained access control, while the REST API and CLI integration are suited to CI workflows. Together, these features cover the operational steps involved in publishing and moving packages through repository environments without expanding into unrelated artifact types.

OpenRepo’s focus is also its main boundary. It covers Debian/Ubuntu, RPM, and generic packages, but the published positioning is narrower than a repository platform built around a wider range of package ecosystems. It also does not provide proxying, so teams seeking a repository layer that caches or mediates upstream package sources should consider an alternative. Choose OpenRepo when self-hosting, Linux package formats, signing, permissions, and promotion are the priorities. Look elsewhere when broad format coverage or proxy functionality is central to the repository strategy.
