Our verdict on OpenRemote

OpenRemote is an open-source IoT platform for professional integrators, manufacturers, and organizations managing connected assets. Its scope covers asset and attribute modeling, device connectivity, automation, dashboards, historical telemetry, maps, geofencing, multi-tenancy, and APIs. Browser-based applications are complemented by Android and iOS consoles, while self-hosted deployments and edge gateways support distributed environments. It is best suited to teams that want broad protocol coverage and control over deployment rather than a narrowly focused device-monitoring tool.

Connectivity is a central strength. Protocol agents support HTTP, MQTT, Modbus, LoRaWAN, Bluetooth, SNMP, Serial, TCP, UDP, KNX, and Velbus, with REST, MQTT, and WebSocket APIs for application access. OpenWeather, Hawkbit, Keycloak, and PostgreSQL are also listed integrations. Automation can use When-Then, Flow, and Groovy rules, while dashboards and Insights widgets present live and historical information. Maps, custom map layers, and geofencing extend the platform into location-aware operations. Edge gateways and manager interconnects make the architecture relevant to distributed deployments, and a machine-learning forecasting service adds analytical depth.

The free Professional Community offering includes the full-featured platform, self-hosting, AWS Marketplace access, and community support. Support Voucher adds email support for issues, training, and consultancy. Managed Service adds managed hosting, company CI/CD, a custom mobile app, a service-level agreement, training, and consultancy; paid services are available by request. Organizations choosing OpenRemote should be prepared to manage a self-hosted platform or budget for services that reduce that responsibility. It is a strong fit for open-source deployments with varied protocols and complex asset models, while teams seeking a fully managed experience from the outset should consider the Managed Service tier.
