Our verdict on OpenObserve
OpenObserve is an open-source observability platform for collecting, storing, searching, and analyzing logs, metrics, and traces. It supports structured and unstructured logs, SQL queries, real-time processing, pipelines, dashboards, alerts, retention controls, and exports. Teams that need self-hosted deployment, control over infrastructure, or a lower-cost way to manage telemetry are the clearest fit. It is also available as a managed web and API service.
Pricing is split between a free self-hosted option and usage-based cloud service. The Open Source plan is free forever, runs on your infrastructure, and includes community support. Pay As You Go costs $0.50 per GB ingested, includes a cloud service, 30-day default log retention, unlimited users, and a 14-day free trial. The Enterprise plan adds custom scale and compliance, additional retention, BYOB infinite retention, SSO, and RBAC. The usage-based model suits teams that prefer to align cost with ingestion, while high-volume environments should estimate storage and ingestion needs carefully.
OpenObserve’s strongest technical fit is for teams that want more than basic log search. It accepts logs through HTTP and supported log shippers, handles structured and unstructured data, and supports SQL filtering, live mode, CSV export, and offline log export. Real-time and scheduled pipelines can transform, filter, and route telemetry. Integrations include OpenTelemetry, Vector, Logstash, Prometheus, Telegraf, Fluent Bit, Fluentd, NetFlow, SNMP, Amazon CloudWatch, and Amazon Kinesis. Choose OpenObserve for open-source control and a broad observability feature set; consider another option if fixed subscription pricing, bundled support, or advanced access controls outside an Enterprise plan are priorities.
