Our verdict on OpenNOP
OpenNOP is an open-source, Linux-based network accelerator for system administrators and organizations operating private WAN infrastructure. It processes TCP traffic across point-to-point, partially meshed, and fully meshed IP networks, with a focus on low-speed connections such as DSL, VPN, frame relay, and satellite links. The software is designed for self-managed deployment rather than a hosted service, and supports both appliance-based and Linux-hosted installation.
Deployment flexibility is a central part of OpenNOP. It can run through inline routing or out-of-line using policy-based routing, allowing network teams to match the software to their existing topology. Its feature set includes TCP payload compression using LZ compression, TCP session processing with modified MSS, automatic discovery of other network accelerators, and bypass mode through service monitoring and health checks. These options make it suited to environments where administrators need direct control over traffic handling and failure behavior.
OpenNOP is most appropriate for Linux-based teams that want open-source TCP acceleration and can manage network appliance or host installation themselves. Remote accelerator failure detection and acceleration shutdown provide a defined response when a connected accelerator is unavailable. At the same time, Linux-only coverage narrows its fit, and the documented design is subject to change. Organizations seeking broader platform coverage or a wider, more mature WAN optimization feature set should consider an alternative.
