Our verdict on OpenMetadata

OpenMetadata is an open-source metadata platform for data teams and organizations managing complex data ecosystems. It combines metadata discovery and cataloging with governance, data quality, observability, semantic context, lineage, APIs, SDKs, and integrations. The lineage model covers tables, columns, dashboards, reports, and pipelines, making it suited to teams that need a connected view of data assets and their dependencies rather than a narrow lineage-only utility.

Lineage is the clearest strength. Scheduled metadata ingestion from connectors, queries, dbt, and supported pipeline services supports automated discovery, while impact analysis helps teams understand downstream effects. The platform also connects with databases, dashboards, pipelines, ML models, messaging services, storage services, and metadata services. REST APIs, SDKs, events, and webhooks extend its fit for teams that need to connect catalog activity with existing workflows and applications.

Deployment is flexible but carries operational responsibility. OpenMetadata supports web and API access, self-hosted infrastructure, Docker-based deployment, and hybrid deployment. Its core platform is open source under the Apache License 2.0, while managed enterprise capabilities are provided separately through Collate. Teams choosing OpenMetadata should be comfortable managing infrastructure and configuring integrations; organizations seeking a focused lineage tool or a separate managed enterprise service may prefer a narrower or commercially operated alternative.
