Our verdict on OpenLLMetry

OpenLLMetry is an open-source observability toolkit for generative AI and LLM applications. It is designed for developers adding OpenTelemetry instrumentation to applications, agents, tools, workflows, tasks, RAG components, and vector databases. Official Python, TypeScript, and Go SDKs capture prompts, completions, embeddings, and token usage, while configurable content tracing provides control over what application content is recorded. OpenLLMetry supports API and self-hosted deployment, and is Apache-2.0 licensed.

Its main strength is breadth within instrumentation. Developers can trace model calls alongside agent and workflow activity, retrieval steps, and vector-database operations, then export the resulting telemetry to Traceloop or compatible observability platforms. Integrations include Axiom, Azure Application Insights, Braintrust, Dash0, Datadog, Dynatrace, Google Cloud, Grafana, Highlight, Honeycomb, HyperDX, IBM Instana, KloudMate, Laminar, and Traceloop. This makes it a practical fit for teams that already use an OpenTelemetry-oriented monitoring stack and want LLM-specific signals without replacing that ecosystem.

OpenLLMetry is narrower than a complete hosted LLM operations suite. It focuses on collecting and exporting telemetry rather than providing a web interface as the core product, and its positioning does not include verified evaluations. The Free Forever hosted plan includes a monitoring dashboard, evaluation dashboard, CI/CD integration, and prompt management at $0 USD per month, but the pricing details primarily describe the hosted Traceloop platform. Choose OpenLLMetry when open-source instrumentation, self-hosting, and export flexibility are priorities. Choose an alternative when you need a single product centered on managed dashboards, verified evaluation coverage, or broader prompt operations.
