Our verdict on OpenLeaderboard
OpenLeaderboard is an open-source leaderboard service for game developers who need ranking infrastructure rather than a complete game operations suite. It provides APIs for submitting scores, retrieving ranks, displaying top players, and querying neighbors or friends. The service supports web, API, and self-hosted deployments, with platform support spanning browser, Node.js, Unity/C#, Docker, AWS, and self-hosted VPS environments.
Its main strength is the depth of its ranking model. Developers can choose all-time, daily, weekly, monthly, or seasonal windows, then segment boards by region, platform, or cohort. Scoring can be configured as higher-is-better or lower-is-better, while best, last, and increment update policies cover different game mechanics. Lexical and first-to-reach tie-breaking add further control. Queries include Top-N, pagination, neighbor, and friends views, and the published feature set includes realtime updates and season management.
OpenLeaderboard also fits teams that want control over ingestion and deployment. Optional HMAC-signed submissions address score-authentication needs, while durable write-behind ingestion and a rebuildable ranking cache support a design where submitted scores and ranking reads are handled separately. REST endpoints and SDKs for Go, Unity/C#, and TypeScript provide several integration paths. The trade-off is scope: this is ranking infrastructure, not a broader platform for game operations, and self-hosting places deployment and maintenance responsibility with the development team. Choose it when configurable policies, segmentation, seasonal boards, and deployment control matter; choose another option if you want a wider managed service around leaderboards.
