Our verdict on OpenIncent
OpenIncent is an open-source incentive compensation engine for teams whose commission plans have outgrown spreadsheets. It converts compensation plans and deal data into per-payee commission payouts, statements, finance registers, and an immutable audit ledger. The software is aimed at technical teams that want local or self-hosted deployment, with support for Windows, macOS, Linux, a Python library, CLI, and local HTTP API. Its scope covers commission calculation, quota attainment, bonus and MBO payouts, payout tracking, and compensation reporting.
Its main strength is the depth of compensation rules it can represent. OpenIncent handles flat, tiered, and accelerator-based commissions, along with team, category, shared, and ramping quotas. It also supports splits, overlays, manager overrides, draws, guarantees, clawbacks, true-ups, and bonus payouts. Inputs can come from CSV, Excel, or warehouse exports, while outputs include XLSX, HTML, and PDF statements. A finance payout register is generated when a period is locked, and the audit ledger traces calculations to rules and deals. The plain-English AI compensation-plan builder adds another way to define plan logic.
The engine is free and open source with no subscription. According to the published service plans, Reconciliation costs $500 one time for one completed pay cycle recomputed and compared with actual payments, including per-payee summaries and discrepancy explanations. Setup costs $750 one time and includes repeatable setup, plan and data mapping, and handover of the configuration and engine. Managed runs cover period runs, statements, reconciliation, and support. Choose OpenIncent when self-hosting, source access, and complex plan logic matter more than a packaged desktop experience. Teams wanting a mature graphical workflow across platforms should account for the Windows beta and source-based Mac and Linux setup.
