Our verdict on OpenDenoise

OpenDenoise is an open-source command-line tool for reducing noise in RAW camera data and exported images. Its primary audience is developers and technically comfortable photographers who want to process RAW Bayer data locally, especially within a darktable workflow. Rather than offering a general-purpose photo editing interface, it focuses on model-based denoising and file conversion through CLI commands.

The standout capability is its Bayer pipeline: AI denoising operates on RAW sensor data and writes DNG files that darktable can edit non-destructively. Other modes cover full-RAW processing and demosaiced or exported TIFF/PNG images, with separate controls for luminance and chrominance strength. Tile-based inference with cosine-feathered blending is intended to support processing across image regions. Batch-style input accepts multiple file paths or globs, which suits scripted or repeated jobs better than one-off point-and-click editing. Its fit is therefore strongest for users comfortable working from a command line and handling image files directly.

The project is explicitly described as a working prototype, and its documentation says the end-to-end CLI flow and several modes have not been fully re-verified. Testing is concentrated on Sony ARW images, so users with other camera RAW formats should treat compatibility expectations cautiously. A darktable Lua plugin is available, but it is untested; the more dependable stated integration is the DNG output that darktable can edit. OpenDenoise is a plausible choice for local experimentation with RAW Bayer denoising and scripted processing, but photographers seeking a polished desktop workflow or verified broad camera support should consider a more established alternative.
