Our verdict on openDCIM

openDCIM is a free, open-source, web-based Data Center Infrastructure Management application for organizations managing physical infrastructure across one or multiple facilities. It covers cabinet and device records, inventory, rooms, data centers, space, power, cooling, network connections, and equipment lifecycle status. Its self-hosted model suits teams that want control over deployment and data center records without a paid software plan, provided they can operate a Linux-based LAMP server with Apache, PHP, and MySQL.

The feature set reaches beyond basic rack documentation. Graphical cabinet views and cabinet map overlays help represent physical layouts, while power-chain mapping follows devices through strips and panels to source feeds. Network-connection mapping is available for switch devices, and device templates support per-device overrides. Rack-request workflow adds an operational process layer, while fault-tolerance reporting and power-outage simulation support infrastructure analysis. Space, power, and cooling capacity management also gives the product a broader planning scope than an inventory-only tool. Equipment archival supports salvage and disposal tracking.

Platform fit is centered on on-premises deployment through the web interface, with Linux, API, and self-hosted support listed. Integrations cover APC, Geist Manufacturing, Liebert, and Server Technology intelligent power strips and UPS devices. That makes openDCIM a strong match for teams seeking broad physical DCIM capabilities and selected power-device connectivity at no license cost. It is less suitable for organizations that require a hosted service or a wider verified integration ecosystem. The downloads page lists version 23.04, released October 15, 2023, as the latest release, while ongoing repository activity and a stated plan for a final release and domain retirement add an important consideration for long-term product planning.
