Our verdict on OpenConnect VPN Server (ocserv)

OpenConnect VPN Server (ocserv) is open-source, self-hosted VPN software for organizations that need remote-access connectivity and centralized user management. It is designed for Linux administrators and works with the OpenConnect client and Cisco AnyConnect protocol. The server supports TLS and DTLS VPN channels, IPv4 and IPv6 networking, server-pushed routes, and authentication through PAM, RADIUS, password files, OTP, OpenID Connect, smart cards, certificates, and Kerberos. Teams choosing ocserv should be comfortable operating their own VPN server rather than looking for a hosted subscription service.

Its strongest area is control over identity, traffic, and user groups. Administrators can apply per-user, per-group, and virtual-host configuration, isolate clients with seccomp processes and separate network devices, and set bandwidth or network-priority limits. Usage statistics are available through an API or RADIUS accounting, while occtl provides interactive and JSON control. Integrations with RADIUS, OpenID Connect, Kerberos, PAM, FreeIPA, and Microsoft Active Directory give it a practical fit for environments with existing identity systems. These capabilities make ocserv suitable when policy-level control matters more than a simplified management experience.

The tradeoff is operational responsibility. Deployment is self-hosted, with Linux as the primary platform and support also covering FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and other BSD-derived systems. There is no hosted service layer described here, so infrastructure, configuration, access policies, and administration remain with the organization. Choose ocserv when your team can manage a Linux-based VPN server and wants open-source control with detailed authentication and traffic policies. Choose a hosted VPN product instead if minimizing server administration or providing a broader turnkey platform is the priority.
