Our verdict on OpenBao

OpenBao is an open-source secrets manager and encryption system for organizations managing credentials, API tokens, certificates, encryption keys, and other sensitive data. It is designed for self-hosted deployments on Linux, Windows, macOS, containers, or Kubernetes, with access through a web UI, command-line interface, and HTTP API. Its capabilities suit infrastructure and application teams that want centralized storage, identity-based authorization, dynamic credentials, lease management, and audit logging under an open-source model.

Its strongest fit is for environments with demanding secrets workflows. OpenBao supports encrypted key/value storage, on-demand dynamic secrets, automatic lease expiration and revocation, database credential generation and rotation, and encryption as a service. Identity-based authentication, authorization, ACL policies, and audit devices recording requests and responses provide controls for managing access. Agent templating and environment-variable secret injection extend secrets delivery, while integrations with PostgreSQL, MySQL/MariaDB, Cassandra, InfluxDB, Valkey, LDAP, and OIDC broaden its infrastructure fit.

Kubernetes support is a clear differentiator for teams operating containerized workloads: the project provides Helm, Agent Injector, and CSI integrations. The trade-off is operational ownership. Because OpenBao is self-hosted, organizations must manage deployment and ongoing operation rather than selecting a hosted plan. The project is governed under the Linux Foundation's OpenSSF and was founded in 2023, giving it a shorter history than older alternatives. Choose OpenBao when open-source control, dynamic secrets, rotation, encryption services, and Kubernetes integration are priorities. Choose another option if a managed service or a longer-established platform is more important.
