Our verdict on OpenAM

OpenAM is an open-source access management solution from Open Identity Platform for organizations protecting web, mobile, cloud, and enterprise applications. It can operate as an identity provider or service provider and supports authentication, authorization, federation, and single sign-on. The deployment model is self-hosted, with support for web, Windows, and Linux environments. It is particularly suited to traditional federation deployments that need control over identity infrastructure rather than a narrowly scoped authorization server.

Its main strength is breadth across established identity protocols and access-management functions. OpenAM supports OAuth 2.0 authorization server and client roles, OpenID Connect provider capabilities, discovery, registration, session management, and SAML 2.0 identity and service provider federation. Authentication modules and configurable authentication chains allow organizations to shape sign-in flows, while policy-based authorization extends control beyond authentication. Token introspection, REST APIs, and a Java SDK add options for application and service integration. High availability is addressed through system and session failover.

OpenAM is distributed as open-source software under the CDDL and includes a free plan, making it a fit for teams that want to deploy and govern the software within their own infrastructure. That choice also defines its main trade-off: the buyer owns the deployment environment and the operational work around it. Organizations needing OAuth, OIDC, SAML, SSO, and authorization policies in one self-hosted product should consider OpenAM. Teams that prefer a managed deployment or only need a focused OAuth server may be better served by a narrower alternative.
