Our verdict on open-appsec

open-appsec is an open-source web application firewall and API security solution from Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. It is designed for teams protecting web applications and APIs across Kubernetes, Docker, or Linux environments. The product uses machine learning to detect and prevent OWASP Top 10 and zero-day threats, while supporting hybrid deployments through local configuration or optional SaaS-based management. Its audience is particularly suited to cloud-native teams that want deployment flexibility and a broad security feature set without being limited to a single proxy or gateway.

Protection extends beyond core WAF filtering. open-appsec includes API discovery, malicious-content blocking, OpenAPI schema validation, anti-bot detection and mitigation, intrusion prevention based on Snort 3.0, malicious file-upload scanning, reputation checks, and configurable rate limiting by source identifier. This breadth makes it relevant for organizations securing both application traffic and API estates. Teams with a narrow requirement for basic web filtering may find the wider feature set more involved than necessary, while teams needing API visibility, bot controls, file security, and rate limiting can keep those functions within one security layer.

Its ecosystem fit is a notable strength. Integrations include Kubernetes, NGINX Ingress, NGINX, Kong, APISIX, Envoy, Envoy Gateway, Istio, NGINX Proxy Manager, NPMplus, SWAG, and CrowdSec. Configuration can be declarative through YAML, Kubernetes, and Terraform, or managed through a GraphQL API. Central SaaS management adds logging, reporting, and monitoring, while local and self-hosted operation supports environments that prefer direct control. Choose open-appsec when open-source availability, machine-learning protection, and varied cloud-native integrations matter; consider another product if you want a narrowly focused WAF with fewer deployment and configuration choices.
