Our verdict on Ontrack File Eraser
Ontrack File Eraser is designed for organizations that need controlled deletion of selected files and folders from active PCs, servers, and virtual machines. Its focus is file-level data destruction rather than complete drive wiping, making it suited to teams that need targeted erasure with documented controls. The product supports both manual selection and automated file and folder erasure, with scheduling through standard Windows components and command-line interface support for operational workflows.
The strongest fit is for organizations that need evidence around erasure activity. Ontrack says the software supports more than 25 erasure standards and compliance requirements including PCI DSS, HIPAA, and EU GDPR. Advanced, customizable reporting and tamper-proof audit trails provide a record of erasure activity, which can help teams manage internal procedures and demonstrate that controlled deletion has taken place. The published offer uses a free consultation and free quote, while the product has no free plan.
Platform fit is straightforward but narrow: Ontrack File Eraser supports Windows systems. That works for Windows-based environments managing selected files across PCs, servers, and virtual machines, especially where scheduled routines, command-line operation, and audit records matter. Organizations seeking targeted, auditable erasure should consider it. Those needing whole-drive wiping, free-space wiping, or a platform beyond Windows should choose a different product category or tool.
