Our verdict on OnlyStatus

OnlyStatus is an open-source, self-hosted synthetic monitoring platform for teams that want to run monitoring independently. It checks websites and APIs through HTTP, TCP, and DNS monitoring, while also covering public status pages, incident and maintenance tracking, private locations, and remote checkers. Its free plan and self-hosted model suit engineering teams that prefer control over where monitoring runs, especially when API checks are the main requirement.

OnlyStatus connects alerts to email, Slack, Discord, webhooks, PagerDuty, and OpsGenie, giving teams several paths for routing incidents. Distributed monitoring adds private locations and remote checkers, which can support checks from different network positions. Public status pages can use custom domains and themes, while REST and RPC APIs provide programmatic access. Deployment is centered on Docker Compose, and the platform runs through its API and self-hosted environment rather than a broad collection of hosted application integrations.

The main trade-off is focus. OnlyStatus covers infrastructure and endpoint checks well across HTTP, TCP, and DNS, but it does not provide verified browser or transaction monitoring. That makes it a better fit for teams monitoring services, APIs, network endpoints, and availability signals than for teams needing end-to-end user journey checks. Password, TOTP, and WebAuthn authentication add useful access controls, while incident tracking keeps operational records in the same system. Teams that want a self-managed monitoring stack should consider OnlyStatus; teams seeking commercially supported service operations or browser-based transaction coverage should choose an alternative.
