Our verdict on OMNEST
OMNEST is an object-oriented discrete-event simulation framework for engineers, researchers, and R&D teams modeling communication networks, protocols, queueing systems, hardware architectures, and other complex systems. Its component-based architecture supports reusable modules, while C++ simulation APIs and NED modeling APIs provide options for detailed model development. The software covers wired, wireless, mobile ad hoc, sensor, vehicular, and time-sensitive network applications, making it suitable for commercial projects that need more than basic network visualization or isolated experimentation.
Its strongest area is the depth of the simulation workflow. The graphical Simulation IDE supports model editing and configuration, while the interactive runtime environment and command-line batch execution accommodate both exploratory work and repeatable runs. Result analysis includes plotting and export, and parallel distributed simulation supports larger or more computationally demanding projects. The embeddable C++ simulation kernel extends OMNEST into applications, while plugins support real-time and hardware-in-the-loop scenarios. Integrations with the INET Framework, SystemC, and HLA / IEEE 1516 add useful ecosystem paths for network, hardware, and distributed simulation work.
Licensing is available as an annual license or a perpetual license, with designated user licensing in both options. The annual license is valid for 12 months and allows flexible license configuration. The perpetual license can be used indefinitely, with optional upgrades when a major release becomes available. Pricing is contact-based, and there is no free plan. OMNEST is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, with API access for application integration. Choose it when commercial licensing, detailed component modeling, and advanced simulation modes justify a dedicated framework; teams seeking a free or open-source tool should consider alternatives.
