Our verdict on OCRmyPDF
OCRmyPDF is an open-source Python application and library for adding an OCR text layer to scanned image PDFs. It makes documents searchable, selectable, and copyable while preserving the original PDF and applying image processing. It suits individuals, developers, document teams, and organizations that need local desktop, server, batch, or self-hosted workflows across Windows, macOS, and Linux. It can also process single image files into PDFs, making it useful when source material is not already packaged as a PDF.
Its strongest fit is a workflow built around searchable and archival documents. OCRmyPDF can generate PDF/A output, correct page rotation, deskew scans, remove noisy backgrounds, optimize images and file size, and produce a companion text sidecar file. Validation of input and output files adds a defined check within the processing flow. Multiple OCR languages are available through installed language packs. The integration model is technical but clear: OCRmyPDF uses Tesseract and works with Ghostscript, pypdfium2, pikepdf, and QPDF. The Python library and plugin interface extend its usefulness for developers and repeatable document pipelines.
The open-source model makes OCRmyPDF a strong choice when control, local processing, and searchable-PDF creation matter more than a hosted interface. It does not recognize handwriting, so documents that depend on handwritten content need another OCR approach. Its command-line, library, and plugin orientation may also be less suitable for teams seeking a purely browser-based workflow. Choose OCRmyPDF for scanned PDFs, archival output, batch processing, and developer-led automation; choose an alternative when handwriting recognition or hosted SaaS delivery is central.
