Our verdict on Observatorium

Observatorium is an open-source observability system for teams running Kubernetes-based telemetry infrastructure. It provides consistent tenancy APIs around components such as Thanos, Loki, Tempo or Jaeger, and Open Policy Agent. The system supports Prometheus-compatible metric ingestion and querying, log ingestion and querying through Loki APIs, authentication, authorization, rate limiting, role-based request handling, and alerting-rule APIs. Its deployment model centers on API access and self-hosting, including Kubernetes Jsonnet and Operator options.

Its main strength is the breadth of its observability backend and ecosystem fit. Prometheus, Thanos, Loki, Grafana, Open Policy Agent, and OpenTelemetry are among its integrations, while the local quickstart includes Grafana-based metric visualization. Teams can use multi-tenant data isolation and tenancy APIs to structure access across environments or users, with OIDC/OAuth2 authentication and policy-based authorization supporting that model. Recording and alerting rules APIs add a control layer for Prometheus workflows. This makes Observatorium a practical fit for organizations that want to assemble and operate an open-source telemetry platform rather than adopt a hosted service.

The trade-off is operational scope. Observatorium is a work-in-progress project, and its published positioning describes distributed tracing as coming soon. The system therefore suits teams prioritizing metrics, logs, tenancy, and Kubernetes deployment controls, but it is less suitable for organizations seeking a complete, currently documented metrics-logs-traces package or a managed SaaS experience. Choose it when control over the observability stack and integration with open-source components matter most; consider another product when built-in distributed tracing or vendor-operated infrastructure is central to the requirement.
