Our verdict on Novellum
Novellum is a browser-based writing workspace for novelists, world-builders, and nonfiction authors. It brings manuscript drafting, book structure, planning, and reference management into one system. The Nexus story bible organizes characters, locations, items, factions, and concepts while automatically detecting mentions in prose. Authors can manage acts, chapters, and scenes with drag-and-drop controls, then work in a rich-text editor with autosave, comments, highlights, and footnotes. Cross-device synchronization supports continued work across browsers, while DOCX, Markdown, and plain-text imports make it suitable for bringing in existing drafts.
Its strongest case is organization beyond the manuscript itself. The planning grid records scene status, synopsis, POV, and word counts, and Insights turns that information into views of word-count trends, scene-length distribution, POV balance, and Nexus coverage. That combination gives writers a structured way to inspect a book's shape while maintaining a connected reference system. The fit is especially clear for projects with substantial casts, settings, or world-building details, rather than for writers seeking only a minimal text editor.
Pricing is straightforward during the beta: the Free while in beta plan includes all features, unlimited books, scenes, and Nexus entries, cross-device sync, DOCX and EPUB export, and optional AI with the author's own provider key. After the beta, Standard is listed at $15 per month or $162 per year. AI options include chat, writing assistance, scene synopses, and import analysis through Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Mistral, or OpenRouter. Choose Novellum for connected planning and story analysis in a web workspace; choose another tool if desktop software or provider-managed AI is essential.
