Our verdict on nix-serve

nix-serve is a small, open-source utility for serving a Nix store as an HTTP binary cache. It is designed for people running Nix or NixOS on their own infrastructure, including local networks and private environments. Other Nix installations can configure the server as a binary-cache substituter, allowing them to download pre-built store paths rather than rebuilding them. The product runs on Linux and focuses specifically on moving Nix store objects and cache metadata over HTTP.

Its strongest feature is the direct, narrow cache workflow. A machine hosting a Nix store can expose that store through an HTTP server, while cache signing adds a way to sign binary-cache content with a generated secret key. Configurable listening ports provide control over how the service is exposed, and the server runs through Starman. Its ecosystem fit is correspondingly focused: the named integrations are Nix, NixOS and Starman, rather than a broad set of build systems or infrastructure platforms.

That focused scope is also the main boundary. nix-serve is a self-hosted utility, not a hosted commercial cache service, and it does not provide remote execution. Teams looking for a Nix-specific cache they can operate directly may find its feature set well aligned with that requirement. Organizations that need hosted operations, support across multiple build systems, broader platform integrations or remote execution should choose a product built around those capabilities instead. nix-serve is best suited to technically managed Nix environments where control over the server and store matters more than a broader service layer.
