  • Where it wins

    • Native VRF support handles overlapping IPv4 and IPv6 prefixes.
    • Automated allocation, address pools, search, and usage statistics.
    • Web, CLI, XML-RPC API, client libraries, and audit logging.
  • Where it doesn't

    • Self-hosted deployment requires installation and ongoing administration.
    • Focused on IPAM rather than broader DNS and DHCP management.
    • Authentication options center on SQLite and LDAP.

Our verdict on NIPAP

NIPAP is a self-hosted, open-source IP address management system for organizations planning, allocating, searching, and documenting IPv4 and IPv6 prefixes and addresses. It suits network teams that need native VRF support, including environments with overlapping prefixes, while retaining control over deployment and integration. Access is available through a web interface, command-line client, XML-RPC API, and client libraries.

Its strongest capability is focused address and prefix management. NIPAP supports regular-expression search, address pools, automated free-address allocation, and usage statistics for used and free addresses. An integrated audit log provides history for IPAM activity, while native VRF support helps separate overlapping network contexts. These features make it a practical fit for teams that need structured subnet planning and allocation rather than a basic address register.

The trade-off is operational scope and deployment responsibility. NIPAP is designed for self-hosted installation, with documentation describing Debian and Unix-like environments, a PostgreSQL-backed backend, and separately deployable web and CLI components. Its ecosystem includes XML-RPC, Python, Java, Oracle, and LDAP, with SQLite and LDAP authentication options. It does not cover DNS or DHCP management, so organizations looking for broader DDI capabilities should choose a product that combines those functions with IPAM. Teams seeking open-source control over prefixes, VRFs, pools, allocation, search, statistics, and audit history should consider NIPAP; teams wanting managed hosting or wider DDI coverage should look elsewhere.
