Our verdict on Nextjournal
Nextjournal is a hosted computational notebook platform for data science, machine learning, research, education, and scientific publishing. It supports Python, R, Julia, Clojure, Bash, JavaScript, and ClojureScript in polyglot notebooks, with real-time collaborative editing and notebook publishing, sharing, and remixing. The Free plan includes unlimited private notebooks, data and secrets management, limited concurrent compute resources, and entry-level compute resources. It is a fit for teams and individuals who need reproducible, shareable computational work rather than a basic local notebook editor.
The published plans show a substantial difference between free access and paid compute capacity. Free provides limited concurrent resources, while Team costs $299 per month and adds unlimited concurrent compute resources, high-performance compute, custom notebook shutdown timeouts, scheduled notebook execution, and computational credits. Enterprise costs $499 per month and adds hosted or on-premises deployment, single sign-on, priority Slack support, dedicated custom compute resources, internal publishing, and computational credits. Paid plans include a 14-day free trial, and the listed paid prices include five editors; additional editors are charged separately.
Nextjournal’s strongest case is its reproducibility and ecosystem fit. Docker-based customizable runtimes, automatic versioning, restoration of notebook changes, secrets management, GPU-backed computation, and connections to GitHub, Amazon S3, and Google Cloud Storage support more controlled research workflows. Imports from Jupyter, Markdown, and R Markdown, plus exports to Markdown and Jupyter/IPython format, make it practical for moving existing work into or out of the platform. Choose Nextjournal when collaborative, versioned, multi-language notebooks and hosted compute justify the subscription. Choose another notebook tool if the $299 monthly Team entry price is difficult to justify or if a web-only platform does not fit your workflow.
