Nextcloud Absence review
A free, self-hosted leave workflow for organizations already running Nextcloud.

Nextcloud Absence is a self-hosted leave-management app for organizations using Nextcloud, particularly mid-sized companies that want employees, managers, and HR to share one leave workflow. Employees can submit vacation and other leave requests, review their leave history, and track balances. Managers handle approvals or rejections, while HR receives company-wide views, corrections, statistics, CSV export, and entitlement management. The app runs as an AGPL-licensed Nextcloud Server app, keeping leave data on the organization’s own infrastructure.
Its strongest fit is the Nextcloud ecosystem. CalDAV synchronization connects leave records with personal and shared calendars, while Nextcloud notifications and Activity support workplace updates. LDAP and Active Directory integrations can fit existing identity and directory setups. Background jobs handle reminders and automatic escalation, and structured audit logging plus role-based permissions divide access among employees, managers, HR, and administrators. Organizations already operating Nextcloud can therefore align leave management with their existing platform rather than adopting a separate SaaS service.
The product covers more than basic request and approval flows: configurable leave types can define approval, balance, note, and replacement rules, with entitlement, used, pending, remaining, carry-over, and adjustment tracking. Its limits matter for buyers needing broader HR automation. There is no payroll integration, dedicated iOS or Android app, or public-holiday tracking. Choose Nextcloud Absence when self-hosting, open-source licensing, and Nextcloud compatibility are priorities; consider another leave platform when mobile apps, payroll connectivity, or holiday-calendar management are essential.
