Our verdict on Network Scanner
Network Scanner is an open-source Android app for discovering and analyzing devices on a local network. It suits Android users who want a free scanner for identifying devices, services, and open ports rather than a dedicated Wi-Fi security assessment. Scanning is performed locally, and the vendor says the app works offline; a Wi-Fi connection is required to scan the local network.
Discovery draws on several methods: ping sweeps with TCP fallback, ARP cache reads, mDNS/Bonjour, SSDP/UPnP, and NetBIOS hostname and workgroup resolution. The app can fingerprint operating systems and identify device types, though MAC address and vendor information are subject to Android limitations. For further inspection, users can scan common ports or all 65,535 ports and retrieve service banners. Device renaming, icon assignment, and network-interface selection provide ways to organize results and direct a scan.
Its scope is network inventory and port inspection, not ongoing protection: the app does not provide security checks or monitoring alerts. Android 8.0 or later is required, so it is not a fit for desktop users or anyone seeking a scanner for another platform. The GPL-3.0 license and community support suit users comfortable with an open-source utility, while those who need security weakness checks, alerts, or broader platform coverage should look elsewhere. Choose Network Scanner for local discovery and detailed port scanning on Android, not as a substitute for continuous Wi-Fi security monitoring.
