  • Where it wins

    • Interactive topology maps with automated and manual link discovery
    • MAC-to-switch-port and MAC-to-IP mapping
    • VLAN, PoE, interface, chassis, and historical record collection
  • Where it doesn't

    • Self-hosted, on-premises deployment limits cloud-first use cases
    • Platform coverage centers on web, Linux, and self-hosted environments
    • Topology maps do not cover application or service dependencies

Our verdict on Netdisco

Netdisco is a self-hosted, web-based network management tool for small to very large networks. It collects device and node data into PostgreSQL through network polling and device APIs, then presents inventories, MAC and IP locations, switch-port information, historical records, network maps, and an API. Its automated discovery starts from seed devices and can learn devices and links through neighbor and routing protocols. Network teams that need open-source topology mapping, port lookup, and hardware visibility are the clearest fit.

Netdisco uses an open-source pricing model with a free plan. Its deployment model is on-premises and self-hosted, with a web interface, backend daemon, and command-line tools. The platform list covers web and Linux environments, so it is better suited to teams prepared to operate the application within their own infrastructure than to buyers seeking a managed cloud service. The product also provides search and retrieval through an API, while the published product details do not identify integrations with external platforms.

Its strongest area is network-level visibility: interactive topology maps, manual topology links, MAC-to-switch-port lookup, MAC-to-IP mapping, hardware inventory, and collection of VLAN, PoE, interface, and chassis information. It also supports switch-port, VLAN, and PoE control, plus historical IP and location records. The topology model focuses on layer-1 and layer-2 neighbor relationships rather than application or service dependencies. Choose Netdisco when open-source discovery and network control matter most; choose another category option when you need cloud deployment, broad platform coverage, or application dependency mapping.
