Our verdict on Nephio

Nephio is an open-source, Kubernetes-based automation platform for deploying and managing distributed network functions and their supporting infrastructure. It is aimed at telecom operators, cloud providers, network-function vendors, and enterprises managing multi-vendor, multi-site environments. Operators can express high-level intent, generate and customize configuration packages, provision cloud and edge infrastructure, and deliver configurations to workload clusters. Its focus is narrower than general-purpose GitOps tools, making it a stronger fit for network-centric operations than for broad application delivery.

The platform combines declarative configuration, Kubernetes resources, and active reconciliation with multi-cluster configuration and policy management. Package workflows cover authoring, review, publication, and orchestration through Porch and kpt, while the management-cluster and workload-cluster model separates control functions from deployed workloads. Nephio also supports cluster provisioning for GKE and other Kubernetes environments, plus a web UI for viewing, editing, and deploying packages. GitHub, GitLab, Gitea, and Google Cloud Source Repositories are supported sources, with Kubernetes clusters and GKE as deployment targets.

Nephio’s ecosystem fit is a major consideration. It integrates with Kubernetes, Config Sync, Argo CD, Flux CD, Cluster API, GKE, and the O-RAN O2 IMS REST provisioning API, giving network teams several paths for configuration delivery and infrastructure management. The trade-off is scope and deployment model: this is a Linux Foundation open-source project designed for self-hosted Linux and Kubernetes environments, not a conventional hosted commercial product.
