Our verdict on MyChild Engine

MyChild Engine is an open-source API library for developmental screening from birth through 36 months. It is aimed at caregivers, clinicians and software teams that need to embed milestone assessment in a private, self-hosted workflow. The engine tracks observations across eight developmental domains, scores weighted questions and is designed to identify patterns for discussion with a pediatrician. It is explicitly not a diagnostic tool, so teams need an appropriate clinical process around its outputs.

Its standout feature is an explainable screening model. Age-appropriate questions cover children from birth to 36 months, while corrected age adjusts expectations for children born preterm. The engine requires multiple independent observations before escalating to high concern, which can help structure follow-up. Explanations trace results to the rules that produced them, and a rule simulator supports testing threshold configurations. According to the vendor, the engine runs locally without transmitting child data to a server, fitting organizations that want on-premise deployment and control over sensitive records.

The vendor says the engine costs nothing, and its open-source model can suit solo developers through enterprise teams. However, the published product is an API rather than a complete pediatric application: there is no caregiver portal, telehealth, growth-chart or immunization-tracking capability, and no general clinic workflow layer. The vendor also says it has not been clinically validated with real children; performance figures shown are based on synthetic profiles. Choose MyChild Engine when developmental screening logic, local operation and inspectable rules are the priority. Choose a broader pediatric system if you need family-facing tools or comprehensive practice management.
