  • Where it wins

    • Persistent PTYs survive server restarts and reboots
    • Nested draggable panes support flexible workspace layouts
    • MCP enables AI-agent control of terminals and workspaces
  • Where it doesn't

    • Windows support is not yet available
    • The browser interface may not suit terminal-only workflows

Our verdict on muxterm

muxterm is an open-source terminal multiplexer built around a browser interface. It is intended for developers and operators who want named workspaces containing multiple terminal panes, with shell sessions that remain available across reconnects, server restarts, and reboots. Its web interface supports desktop and mobile access through a progressive web app, while the published platform scope covers macOS, Linux, and browser/PWA use. Windows support is coming soon, so Windows-based teams should look elsewhere for a currently supported deployment path.

The standout capability is session persistence combined with clean reconnect replay. A Go session daemon manages the PTYs independently from the HTTP server, allowing terminal sessions to continue when the web-serving component restarts. Workspaces can contain draggable, arbitrarily nested split panes, and browser panes can proxy local web applications alongside terminal sessions. The result is a workspace model suited to development environments where related shells and local interfaces need to stay together. Users seeking a conventional terminal multiplexer without a browser control layer may prefer a narrower, terminal-first alternative.

Deployment features extend beyond the core pane layout. muxterm supports system-service installation on Linux and macOS, remote binary deployment over SSH, and an MCP server for AI-agent control of workspaces and terminals. The PWA can be installed with offline support, while browser access keeps the interface separate from the persistent server-side sessions. These capabilities make muxterm a fit for users who value remote access, recoverable sessions, and agent-assisted terminal management. It is less suitable for Windows users today or for teams that require a broader native desktop platform footprint.
