Our verdict on MSBuild
MSBuild is Microsoft's open-source build engine for applications and Visual Studio projects. It defines build processes through XML-based project files containing properties, items, targets, tasks, and imports. Developers can run builds from Visual Studio, MSBuild.exe, or dotnet build, including in command-line and continuous-integration environments. It suits teams building .NET applications, Visual Studio projects, and other software that needs repeatable compilation and artifact creation across Windows, macOS, or Linux.
Its strongest fit is the Microsoft development ecosystem. MSBuild integrates with Visual Studio, the .NET SDK, and Azure Pipelines, while its command-line execution supports both MSBuild.exe and dotnet build. Multitargeting covers .NET Framework and .NET versions, and project files can organize reusable build logic through targets and tasks. The platform also supports ZIP archive creation through the ZipDirectory task, making compiled binaries and other output artifacts part of a defined build process.
Build control is a notable strength. Incremental builds use input and output timestamps, while multiple MSBuild nodes support parallel project execution. Logging can target the console, files, binary logs, or custom loggers, and the Microsoft.Build API provides programmatic control. Build result cache input and output options are available, but remote execution is not a core capability, and there are no built-in AI features. Choose MSBuild when .NET and Microsoft tooling are central to the workflow; consider another build system when those capabilities are priorities.
