Our verdict on MooseFS

MooseFS pools commodity servers into a single namespace for distributed file and block storage. It is suited to development, smaller deployments, research, virtualization, and demanding production workloads that need POSIX access across storage nodes. Files can also be exposed as block devices, while applications can connect through the C API or mfsio library. The platform is open source, self-hosted, and available across Linux, Windows, macOS, web, and API environments.

Pricing follows a freemium model. Community is free forever and licensed under GPLv2, with a POSIX filesystem, replication, and single-parity erasure coding. Pro Personal costs €9 per TiB beyond the free allowance and adds the full Pro feature set, automatic failover, multi-location clusters, advanced erasure coding, and a native Windows client. Pro Enterprise is intended for commercial deployment and adds automatic master failover, multi-location deployment, up to 9 parity sums, and 24/7 manufacturer support. The published plans show usage-based Pro Personal pricing rather than a conventional monthly subscription.

Its strongest technical fit is distributed storage that combines a single namespace with configurable replication or erasure coding. Automatic healing and recovery address disk or node failures, while parallel reads and writes use multiple storage nodes. Kubernetes integration is provided through mounts and a CSI driver, and Pro adds multi-location storage policies. MooseFS is a sensible choice for teams seeking affordable POSIX storage with open-source Community access and a path to paid failover and multi-location features. Organizations needing broader protocol or integration coverage should evaluate alternatives.
