Our verdict on Moonlit

Moonlit is an open-source command-line build and release automation engine for teams that want to define pipelines in YAML and run them locally or in CI. Pipelines use variables, stages, and ordered steps, with steps calling WebAssembly plugins distributed through OCI registries. Its scope spans conventional-commit analysis, semantic version calculation, changelog generation, GitHub and GitLab releases, and publishing workflows. That breadth suits solo developers and small or mid-market teams that want an extensible pipeline without a paid-plan structure; it is less suited to teams looking for a hosted visual release-management service.

The plugin model is central to Moonlit’s approach. Plugins run as sandboxed WebAssembly components, and users can grant each plugin specific network, filesystem, environment-variable, and subprocess permissions. Plugin capabilities cover Git and GitHub or GitLab operations, Slack notifications, npm and .NET package builds and publishing, and Docker image builds and pushes. Plugins can also be distributed and cached as OCI artifacts. This makes Moonlit a fit for teams comfortable composing release workflows from plugins and managing permissions, rather than expecting every integration to be a direct built-in connection.

Release steps connect versioning and release artifacts: Moonlit analyzes conventional commits, calculates semantic version increments including prereleases, and generates categorized changelogs with optional AI-assisted refinement. Generated changelog data can be used to create GitHub and GitLab releases. The tool is open source under MIT or Apache-2.0 licenses and runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its local-or-CI, self-hosted and desktop deployment model gives teams control over where pipelines run, while documentation is the listed support channel. Choose Moonlit if you want a free, extensible release pipeline and are prepared to work with YAML and plugins; consider alternatives if you need a hosted interface or broader support options.
