Our verdict on Monaco Editor

Monaco Editor is an open-source code-editing library for developers who want to embed an editor in a web application, rather than install a standalone IDE. Derived from Visual Studio Code, it runs in the browser and can be installed through npm. Its document models represent editable content, language, URI, and edit history, while provider APIs let an application supply editor assistance such as completion and hover information. That makes Monaco relevant to teams building products with an in-app code or text editing experience, from solo developers to enterprise teams.

The library’s depth is in the editor component and its language-aware capabilities. It includes language services for TypeScript, JavaScript, and JSON, native Language Server Protocol support, and a diff editor for comparing text models. Developers can also define custom language tokenizers and grammars through Monarch. These pieces offer room to tailor an embedded editing experience, but they do not turn Monaco into a full development environment: the published notes say VS Code extensions do not work in Monaco, and the product has no built-in debugger. Choose it when the application itself needs an editor surface and its team can integrate and shape that component; choose a standalone editor when the goal is a ready-to-use desktop coding environment or an extension-driven workflow.

Monaco is distributed under the MIT License, and the open-source project has a free plan. Its platform is web, with ESM distribution and npm installation supporting its application-embedding role. The boundary is important for platform fit: mobile browsers and mobile web app frameworks are unsupported. That makes it a poor fit for products whose editing experience must run on mobile, as well as for developers seeking a general-purpose personal code editor. For browser-based applications on supported platforms, its combination of editor APIs, document models, language services, and diff editing is the central reason to consider it.
