Our verdict on Moderne
Moderne is an enterprise code modernization platform for engineering, security, and platform teams. It runs OpenRewrite recipes across large, multi-repository codebases for migrations, dependency upgrades, security remediation, semantic searches, and coordinated pull requests. Its Lossless Semantic Tree is designed to preserve code structure, formatting, comments, and type relationships. Support for Java, Kotlin, Groovy, Python, C#, .NET, JavaScript, TypeScript, Go, Ruby, COBOL, and Scala makes it suited to organizations managing varied technology estates.
The standout capability is coordinated, repository-scale transformation rather than isolated file editing. Teams can run impact analyses and dry runs, inspect dashboards, maintain audit trails, and author custom recipes with YAML, Refaster templates, or Java. The local CLI supports building LST artifacts and running recipes, while AI-agent integrations include Moderne MCP, Trigrep, and Prethink. GitHub, GitLab, Azure DevOps Repos, Bitbucket Cloud, and Bitbucket Data Center cover major source-control environments; Artifactory and Nexus support artifact workflows, with SAML and OIDC available for identity integration.
