Our verdict on MockPilot

MockPilot is an MIT-licensed, open-source VS Code extension for creating, managing, serving, and testing mock APIs. It runs a local mock server and uses YAML files to define API behavior, with a visual editor for users who prefer a graphical workflow. Frontend developers, API testers, documentation teams, and developers working offline can use it to create local responses without relying on a hosted service. Its status bar shows server status and route count, while controls for starting, stopping, reloading, and testing servers stay inside VS Code.

Configuration and scenario handling are the main strengths. MockPilot automatically reloads when mock files change, which supports an iterative local workflow, and multiple response rules allow different responses for different scenarios. The product also connects with GitHub Copilot, Cursor, and Claude in VS Code for AI-assisted mock configuration generation. Claude Skill auto-installation adds another IDE-oriented option for generating or managing configurations. These capabilities make MockPilot a practical fit for teams already working in VS Code and keeping mock definitions in YAML.

The trade-off is a narrow technical and platform scope. Request matching is based on paths, and supported protocols are HTTP and REST. The product is local and self-hosted rather than presented as a hosted mock API service, so its fit depends on a development workflow centered on local tools. Choose MockPilot when VS Code controls, editable YAML, visual configuration, hot reload, and local scenario rules are priorities. Consider an alternative when you need broader protocol coverage, more advanced request matching, or a wider platform and integration ecosystem.
