Our verdict on MIMIC Simulator
MIMIC Simulator creates virtual networks of up to 100,000 SNMP-manageable devices on one server. It is intended for teams testing network-management applications, including development, quality assurance, demonstrations, training, and deployment planning. Windows, Linux, and API access are supported, with public-cloud virtual machines also included in the vendor’s product description. Its emulation model covers real-time device behavior and independent IP or IPv6 addresses for simulated devices.
The strongest fit is its depth for SNMP-focused testing. MIMIC supports SNMPv1, SNMPv2C, and SNMPv3, along with public and private MIB compilation. Teams can generate configurable SNMP traps and trap storms, record production networks and test labs for simulation, and modify MIB object simulations during runtime. Batch scripting supports automated regression testing, while interfaces for Tcl, Python, Perl, Java, C++, PHP, Go, and JavaScript provide several automation paths. These capabilities make it suitable for validating management software against varied device populations and event conditions.
The published purchasing model is contact sales, and the evaluation is time-limited rather than a perpetual free plan. MIMIC is therefore oriented toward organizations that need a dedicated SNMP emulator for structured testing, automation, or planning. It is less suitable for buyers seeking a broad network simulator spanning protocols beyond SNMP or a general-purpose tool with publicly stated self-service pricing. Choose it when scale, SNMP version coverage, MIB control, traps, and repeatable testing matter more than broad simulation scope.
