Our verdict on Microsoft Azure Arc
Microsoft Azure Arc extends Azure management, governance, security, and selected services to infrastructure outside Azure. It is designed for organizations operating across datacenters, edge locations, on-premises environments, other public clouds, and Kubernetes infrastructure. Teams can use it to organize inventory, manage Windows and Linux servers, attach and govern Kubernetes clusters, administer virtual machines, and represent resources through Azure Resource Manager. The strongest fit is for hybrid Azure and multicloud teams that want one management model across distributed infrastructure.
The core control plane is free and includes inventory and resource organization, server administration, and VM self-service operations. A 30-day trial is available. Additional Azure management, security, monitoring, and data services may be charged separately. The platform connects with Azure Monitor, Defender for Cloud, Azure Update Manager, Azure Automation, Azure Policy, Azure RBAC, Microsoft Sentinel, Azure Machine Learning, VMware vSphere, System Center Virtual Machine Manager, and Azure Local. GitOps support includes Argo CD and Flux v2, giving platform teams options for configuration management alongside policy-based governance.
Azure Arc is broad rather than narrowly focused: its capabilities cover servers, virtual machines, Kubernetes clusters, databases, SQL Server instances, policy, compliance, monitoring, GitOps, and selected Azure data services on Kubernetes. That breadth makes it a practical choice for organizations already aligned with Azure management services and operating mixed infrastructure. Teams that only need basic server administration, or that want a cloud-neutral control plane without Azure-centered services, should consider a more focused alternative. Its value depends on how much of the surrounding Azure ecosystem an organization intends to use.
