Our verdict on Miasm

Miasm is a free, GPLv2-licensed reverse engineering framework written in Python. It is designed for analysts and developers who need programmable control over binary analysis rather than a single graphical workflow. The framework can open, modify, and generate PE and ELF binaries, while providing assembly and disassembly, an intermediate representation for assembly semantics, JIT-based dynamic code emulation, symbolic execution, and expression simplification for deobfuscation. Its architecture support includes x86 in 16-, 32-, and 64-bit modes, ARM, ARM Thumb, AArch64, MIPS32, SH4, MSP430, PowerPC 32-bit, and MEP.

Miasm is distributed as source code and Python packages for local installation, with documentation and examples maintained by the project. Its open-source model makes the core framework available without a paid tier, and there are no commercial plans to compare. The main value is technical depth: users can move between static analysis, intermediate representation, dynamic emulation, and symbolic execution within one Python-oriented toolkit. IDA Pro integration adds a path into an established reverse engineering workflow, while binary modification and generation extend its use beyond inspection.

The trade-off is focus. Miasm does not provide a source-level decompiler, and firmware analysis is not described as a supported workflow. It also does not provide a verified plugin API, which may matter to teams planning a formal extension ecosystem. Platform support covers Windows, Debian, Ubuntu, and Kali Linux, with self-hosted local installation, but the published platform scope is narrower than a broadly distributed commercial tool. Choose Miasm for programmable hybrid analysis, emulation, deobfuscation, and binary transformation. Choose an alternative if you need source-level decompilation, firmware-focused workflows, or a documented plugin API.
