Our verdict on Meson
Meson is an open-source build system for projects written in C, C++, C#, D, Fortran, Java, Rust, and other supported languages. It targets developers who need portable builds across Linux, macOS, and Windows without writing build definitions in a general-purpose programming language. Projects use Meson's readable, non-Turing-complete DSL, with separate out-of-source build directories that keep generated files apart from source code. Meson can produce Ninja, Visual Studio, or Xcode backends, making it suitable for teams working across different development environments.
Its strongest area is the build workflow itself. Dependency discovery can use pkg-config, CMake, and other methods, while Wrap files and WrapDB provide fallback dependencies when suitable system packages are unavailable. Meson also supports executable and static or shared library targets, built-in test execution, installable targets, staging, and install tags. Cross-compilation extends the workflow beyond desktop operating systems to bare-metal targets. These capabilities give C and C++ teams a structured path from configuration through testing and installation, while Cargo.lock support adds a defined dependency input for Rust dependency wraps.
Meson is distributed as open-source software, which suits teams seeking a build system without a commercial pricing structure. Its scope is narrower than a broader delivery platform: the published capabilities center on configuring, generating, compiling, testing, and installing software. Cargo.lock support should also be understood specifically in the context of Cargo wraps rather than as a general-purpose lockfile for every dependency type. Choose Meson when readable build definitions, multiple native backends, cross-compilation, and multi-platform development matter most. Consider another category of tool when the primary need is packaging, remote execution, or build caching.
