Our verdict on MCPaint

MCPaint is a free, open-source drawing and image-editing app that runs in a modern web browser. It suits casual users who want to sketch, annotate an image, make a simple diagram, or work on a small pixel-art image without downloading software or creating an account. Its Paint-style interface includes freehand tools, shapes, text, selections, and image adjustments, so it covers everyday raster tasks in one browser-based workspace.

For quick edits, the toolset spans pencil, brush, airbrush, eraser, fill, and color picking, alongside line, curve, rectangle, polygon, ellipse, and rounded-rectangle tools. Text supports captions and labels, while rectangular and free-form selections offer basic ways to isolate parts of an image. Undo and redo are available. Pixel-art work gets a grid at 400% zoom or higher, and MCPaint can open and save PNG, JPEG, WebP, and BMP files. That breadth is practical for simple tasks, but the product is not positioned as a deep illustration environment: users who need verified layer workflows, pressure sensitivity, or extensive brush customization should compare alternatives aimed at more advanced drawing.

MCPaint's optional AI assistant turns written prompts into drawing and editing commands. It requires an internet connection and an available AI service, so it is an addition rather than a requirement for using the core editor. The browser-first approach and free access make the app easy to consider for solo users who value a lightweight start; its open-source status may also matter to those who prefer open software. Choose it for uncomplicated edits and pixel-art experiments. For complex artwork or workflows that depend on specialized drawing controls, a more full-featured editor is a better fit.
