Our verdict on Matchbox

Matchbox is a self-hosted service for matching bare-metal machines to provisioning profiles during PXE boot. It is aimed at infrastructure teams provisioning Fedora CoreOS or Flatcar Linux across physical machines and virtualized environments. Profiles can define kernels, initrds, iPXE or GRUB2 boot configurations, and Ignition configuration, while machine selection can use MAC addresses, UUIDs, and labels. Matchbox is open source under the Apache-2.0 license and can run as a binary, container, or Kubernetes workload.

Its strongest area is network-based, unattended provisioning. PXE and iPXE support handles machine boot, kernel and initrd delivery provide the required boot assets, and HTTP asset serving exposes boot images and configuration data. Ignition and GRUB2 rendering extend the workflow beyond initial boot, giving teams a way to connect machine identity with repeatable operating system configuration. The authenticated gRPC API also provides a programmatic control surface, while Terraform support connects provisioning profiles and infrastructure workflows. Kubernetes, Docker, and QEMU/KVM integrations broaden the deployment context without changing Matchbox’s network-boot focus.

Matchbox is a good fit when the target environment is built around bare-metal provisioning, machine matching, and Fedora CoreOS or Flatcar Linux. Its focused OS support is also the main boundary: teams needing a broad catalogue of operating systems or a general-purpose desktop deployment tool should consider an alternative. The self-hosted model gives infrastructure teams control over where the service runs, but it also makes deployment and ongoing operation part of the implementation. Choose Matchbox for open-source, API-driven network provisioning; look elsewhere if you want a hosted service or AI-assisted deployment features.
