Our verdict on MarkLogic Server
MarkLogic Server is a proprietary multi-model database for enterprise applications and data platforms. It brings document, graph, relational, geospatial, vector, text, and binary data into one system, with support for JSON, XML, binary, and text formats. It is aimed at organizations that need more than document storage, particularly teams building data platforms with search, transactional processing, analytics access, and controlled deployment across on-premises, cloud, container, or managed environments.
Its strongest technical case is the combination of breadth and query capability. Built-in universal-index full-text search works alongside vector embedding storage, indexing, similarity search, and hybrid search. ACID multi-document and multi-statement transactions support coordinated updates, while horizontal clustering, high availability, disaster recovery, and point-in-time recovery address operational requirements. Security includes role-based, document-level, and element-level controls with auditing. REST, Java, Node.js, Optic, and SQL APIs, plus integrations such as Power BI, Tableau, MuleSoft, Apache NiFi, Pega, Apache Spark, and AWS Glue, give it several paths into an existing enterprise stack.
The free Developer edition is full-featured for development and evaluation, supports up to 1 TB of data, and is restricted to noncommercial use. The Enterprise plan is for production deployment, provides unlimited data storage, uses a core-based subscription, and can add advanced capabilities and tools. The Progress Data Platform extends the offering with semantic AI and modeling, business rules automation, and more than 100 enterprise connectors. MarkLogic Server suits organizations that value multi-model depth, search, governance, and deployment flexibility. Teams seeking a narrowly focused document database or an open-source product may prefer a simpler alternative.
