Our verdict on Mailfence
Mailfence is a Belgium-based secure email service for privacy-conscious individuals, families, organizations, and universities. Its browser-based service combines email with OpenPGP end-to-end encryption, digital signatures, key management, aliases, calendars, documents, contacts, groups, and mobile access. Web, iOS, and Android access support different working styles, while two-factor authentication adds an account-security control. The broader suite makes it relevant to users who want private email alongside shared productivity features rather than email alone.
Pricing is structured as a freemium ladder. Free includes 1 GB total storage, split between 500 MB of email storage and 500 MB of document storage, with web access. Base costs €2.50 per month with annual billing and adds 11 GB total storage, 5 GB for email, and 10 aliases, but excludes custom domains and POP, IMAP, SMTP, and ActiveSync. Entry costs €3.50 per month with annual billing and adds 40 GB total storage, 10 GB for email, 50 aliases, custom domains, and standard mail protocols. Pro costs €9.50 per month with half-yearly billing and offers 78 GB, up to 100 aliases, custom domains, protocol access, and priority support. Ultra costs €29 per month with monthly billing and raises storage to 225 GB with up to 200 aliases.
Mailfence fits users who need interoperability with established email and calendar software. Eligible plans support IMAP, POP, SMTP, CalDAV, CardDAV, Exchange ActiveSync, XMPP, Thunderbird, and Apple Calendar, while groups can share mailboxes, calendars, contacts, and documents. That breadth is useful for organizations and families coordinating across devices. The trade-off is plan-dependent access: the free tier is storage-constrained, and Base does not support standard mail clients or custom domains. Choose Mailfence for encrypted email plus collaboration and protocol flexibility; choose a narrower service if you need a simpler plan structure or mail-client access at the entry paid tier.
