Our verdict on Litmaps
Litmaps is a web-based literature discovery and review tool for researchers, students, professionals, labs, and research groups. It combines keyword and academic article search with recommendations based on citations, references, authors, and semantic similarity. Users can build visual literature maps, organize collections, identify research gaps, monitor fields for new papers, and support systematic or scoping review workflows. Its strongest fit is for people who need to understand how a body of research connects and where to look next.
Discovery is the product’s clear center of gravity. Advanced search filters, configurable literature alerts, map annotation, sharing, and reference export support an ongoing research workflow rather than a one-time search. Imports from BibTeX, RIS, and PubMed, plus connections with Zotero, Mendeley, EndNote, and PaperPile, make it easier to bring existing references into the workspace. Zotero synchronization is included in Pro, while the Free plan includes basic search, literature alerts, visualization, and sharing. That combination suits researchers who value citation-driven exploration and visual evidence mapping.
The published plans show a Free option, Pro at $10 per month, Pro at $120 per year, and a Team plan with team-wide collaboration. Pro adds advanced search, unlimited inputs, unlimited articles, unlimited Litmaps, configurable alerts, and Zotero Sync. Litmaps is a good pick for literature discovery, mapping, and monitoring, including researchers supporting systematic or scoping reviews. It is less suitable for teams seeking a full-text management system or a broader review environment centered on full-text handling. Researchers who primarily need connected-paper discovery should find the feature set closely aligned with that workflow.
